We are dealing with a site in Florida, USA for which a 100,000 retail establishment is planned. The site contains an area of approximately 20,000 which contains an organic sand fill with 12 percent organic content by weight.
We have found that the organic sands are stable under the weight of the floor slab and propose to leave the sand in-place below the slab. At 12 percent organic content by weight, we question whether generation of methane at hazardous levels are possibility.
Since many structure are founded over soils with some level of organics included, we are curious as to whether there is a threshold level below which generation of methane at hazardous level below a floor slab cannot occur.
