The Tanncherfi inlier is located 60 km to the east of the town of Taourirt. It contains several showings and deposits of manganese at Tanouralt and Boukouali.
Two types of mineralization are present: firstly veins of manganese mineralization at the base of the Triassic, and secondly stratiform beds, hosted within the clay and red sandstone of the upper Trias and the upper Triassic basalts. A gradual transition between the two types of mineralisation was identified at the occurence at Boukouali.
The stratiform mineralization consists of manganite which has suffered some alteration to pyrolusite. In contrast the vein mineralization consists of psilomelane, hausmannite and braunite.
The old mines in this region operated during the 1960's and produced about 50,000 tonnes of ore grading at 48% Mn. As the mineralised layers were only 10 to 15 cm thick, their exploitation was only possible by the use of artisinal mining methods which have now exhausted the small deposits. The possibility of increasing the resource associated with these worked-out deposits appears to be somewhat limited.
