ONHYM summary of Manganese potential (2011)

Bourdine is located approximately 16 km SE of El Aioun and ten miles from the east-west Moroccan railway line. The deposit has been known since 1914 and had a total production of around 7,000 tonnes grading at 52% Mn.

Four types of mineralisation are known in this area:

  1. Veins of manganese with an average thickness of one metre, lying at the top of the Hercynian granodiorite basement in the vicinity of the unconformable contact with the Permo-Trias;
  2. A stockwork of small veins of manganese at the top of the basement;
  3. Stratiform beds directly overlying the manganese veins and stockwork found at the base of Permo-Trias;
  4. Layers of manganese oxide found at the base of the Triassic basalts.

The first three types of mineralization are epigenetic and have same mineral paragenesis, consisting of braunite, hausmannite, pyrolusite and psilomelane. In contrast the last type of mineralisation observed is syngenetic but still has the same paragenesis as the first three types of mineralisation observed.

The ONHYM feels that a systematic exploration program of short drill-holes, 10 to 20 metres in depth, beneath the stratiform manganese horizon (which is related to the Triassic basalts), should be sufficient to detect the presence of hidden veins of Mn in the basement rocks. Their presence, if found, would result in an increase in known manganese resources and and corresponding economic opportunities for the Bourdine region.
