I am seeking collaborators for a bid to the joint EPSCR/NERC programme on Waste and Pollution Management with a particular focus on contaminated land.

The deadline for outline proposals is the 12 February 1998. We are interested in various themes within this programme including:

  • the behaviour of organic pollutants in the sub-surface (mifration, sorption, transformation).
  • rapid on-site sampling and analysis
  • in-situ technologies that enhance natural degradation of organics (bioremediation) and their constraints.

My own expertise lies in the extraction and analysis of soils etc. I have published papers in the areas of supercritical fluid extraction, microwave-assisted extraction and accelerated solvent extraction. An abbreviated list of publications is attached.

"Applications of Supercritical Fluids in Industrial Analysis", Editor J.R. Dean, Blackie Academic and Professional, Glasgow (August 1993).

"Extraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from highly contaminated soils using microwave energy", I.J. Barnabas, J.R. Dean, I.A. Fowlis and S.P. Owen, Analyst, 120, 1897 (1995).

"Microwave-Enhanced Solvent Extraction of Soil for Organic Pollutants Analysis", J.R. Dean, Encyclopedia of Environmental Analysis and Remediation, J. Wiley and Sons Ltd. (1997).

"Accelerated solvent extraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from contaminated land", J.R. Dean, Anal. Comm., 33, 191 (1996).

"Extraction of hexaconazole from weathered soils: A comparison between Soxhlet extraction, microwave-assisted extraction, supercritical fluid extraction and accelerated solvent extraction", S.P. Frost, J.R. Dean, K.P. Evans, K. Harradine, C. Cary and M.H.I. Comber, Analyst, 122, 895 (1997).

"Extraction methods for environmental organic analysis", J.R. Dean, John Wiley and Sons Ltd., Chichester, UK (1998).

Dear John,

What about getting together with Liverpool John Moores University which is already heavily involved with the bioremediation of contaminated land?

Regards,

claire
