Dear Micky,

Hello Micky

I am trying to find information on possible remediation techniques for sites with a high content of sulfides that threaten the durability of existing underground concrete structures.

Do you have any idea how I could go about finding a solution to this problem?

Kind Regards

Vanessa

Hello there Vanessa

I have forwarded your request on to a couple of mailing lists hosted at www.mailbase.ac.uk

  1. Environmental Geology (geo-env)
  2. Forum on Contamination in Land: (focil)
  3. Geotechnical Engineering (engineering-geotech)
  4. Unsaturated Soil (unsaturated-soil)

Their respective Websites (with archives of the past 12 months' messages) are at :-

  1. www.mailbase.ac.uk/lists/geo-env/
  2. www.mailbase.ac.uk/lists/focil/
  3. www.mailbase.ac.uk/lists/engineering-geotech/
  4. www.mailbase.ac.uk/lists/unsaturated-soil/

Another avenue you might explore is the base-metal mining sector. Usually the metal is extracted in the sulphide form, processed (by froth flotation) and the 'waste' disposed of in dumps.

The change from a 'reducing' to an 'oxidising' environment often leads to major environmental problems (acid water in strip mines etc). The enviromine section of the www.infomine.com website has a fairy extensive archive on these issues.

cheers

Micky

I would suggest that you talk to at the National Technical University of Athens in the Department of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering.

Their research group is extremely experienced in remediation methodologies (in particular Acid Rock Drainage generation from waste high in sulphides) and have worked on a number of sites in Greece (Lavrio, etc) and abroad (Romania, Bulgaria, Sardinia) in collaboration with our University (Imperial College) and a number of international engineering firms.

ECE or Electrochloride Extraction is a proven technology that removes chlorides from concrete. If the corrosive ions are in the concrete, a similar process can be applied to treat the concrete.

For surrounding soil, electrokinetics is a highly viable technique that would remove the unwanted ions without disturbing the substructure.
